Workshop 4: Friday 11:45 pmSocrates: "Crisis management in schools"NOTE: This workshop is to continue over Workshop 3 and 4 Exercise satchel is presented by personnel from the DET’s School Safety and Response Unit which includes officers from DET and the NSW Police Force. By the end of 2009 all schools are required to have Emergency Management Procedures in place under OHS guidelines. Emergency management includes incidents involving violence, weapons, illegal drugs and other criminal activity. This exercise will clarify procedures and possibly provide new ideas for emergency management coordinators and perspective principals. The exercise is very interactive with participants working in small groups using specialised computer software to practise managing a hypothetical scenario. Decisions are logged on group computers and projected on the screen for discussion during plenary sessions. Participants would benefit from having prior understanding of the:
Mark Hewitt: "Sustaining It- Moving In and Moving On. The challenges of creating a leadership climate and ensuring it continues after you move on"An exploration of two elements of leadership – creating positive
climate of leadership when you take up a principalship. Mark has been a principal for five years. He spent three years as Principal of Peel High School in Tamworth. Peel was the only high school included in the initial Schools in Partnership initiative. In late 2007 he took up the principalship of Newcastle High School. Mark has shared some ideas as part of the Principals Preparation Program. During this workshop Mark will develop and share his learning and ideas on sustaining leadership. The workshop will be practical and participants will have opportunities to share ideas and thoughts. Jason Pascoe: "Staff mental health and wellbeing"This workshop introduces the critical role that staff mental health and wellbeing plays in the life of the school as a whole, and as part of the school MindMatters initiative. The Staff Matters Wellbeing at Work model will be used to introduce materials and strategies to improve staff wellbeing. The workshop explores personal mental health and wellbeing, interpersonal processes for the individual and the site as well as the professional aspects of people's work that relates to mental health and wellbeing. Schools will reflect on how they survey and check on their progress in wellbeing. Peter Shellard: "Making good things happen - innovations in secondary schools"Peter was Deputy Principal at Singleton High School and past president of the Hunter DP Association when this association ran the conference. He ran a session at that conference on developing software to support the work of DP. It was well supported. Peter enjoyed that conference and looks forward to presenting at this one. Peter has been a DP for 13 years in three schools, has a Doctorate in Education (USyd) (Policy, Curriculum & Learning) and has been voted Fellow of the Australian College of Educators "... in recognition for outstanding contributions to education." His presentation on innovations cover a range of areas in administration, delivery of the curriculum and making good things happen in a sometimes hostile environment. Dale Palmer: "The doughnut - a schools QT journey"This workshop is about unpacking “quality teaching” and exposing the journey of a typical Sydney High School in using student data to improve student outcomes. The Workshop outlines quality teaching in manageable terms and shows how the culture of a school can change. The workshop is a mixture of information and interaction with the participants. Judy Ann Abdini: "Leading a school that makes a difference for all - Part B"Key themes consistently appear in the effective schools research. Why is it that we struggle to apply what the research suggests? Deputy Principals have a challenging job – one that is often made more difficult because the model of schooling doesn’t suit the students. Appropriate models of curriculum and learning can make all the difference. Find out how to analyse your schools effectiveness and what to do as your next steps. Darcy Moore: "Nurture, nourish & grow your personal learning network PLN"This workshop provides delegates with an opportunity to establish a PLN (Personal Learning Network), choosing from a suite of Web 2.0 tools that can be used within DET schools. Participants will be able to set up a blog and micro-blog, accounts for social bookmarking and also Google Reader to make effective use of RSS feeds. The mysteries of the DET email system can be explored on request e.g. distribution lists. Note: Participants would benefit from having their own laptop with enough user rights to access the wireless connection at the venue. Anderson/Johnson: "Staffing"The presentation will give participants a 'behind the scenes' look at what takes place at Staffing Services when filling vacancies for schools and give Deputy Principals insight into how to manage whole school staffing. The session will connect the theory of the staffing Agreement with what happens in practice. Advice will be provided on the dos and don'ts so participants grow in confidence to lead and manage the staffing of their schools. Page last updated September 2009 |
