School Safety and Security Unit: "Exercise SATCHEL - Serious Incident Management"

Note: exercise is continuation of Workshop Session 1

Exercise Satchel has been developed to support school principals and deputies in managing incidents involving violence, weapons, illegal drugs and other criminal activity. The simulation exercise uses video footage, email, etc relating to an ongoing incident in a fictional high school.

Participants make decisions to manage the situation as it unfolds throughout the school day. The decisions are then discussed and input is provided by DET and police officers from the Safety and Security Directorate.

DET policy and procedures will be highlighted as well as procedures for working with police.
The exercise will take the full 2-hours. Normally this exercise is a 3-hour presentation however it will be reduced to fit the time restrictions for the Conference.

Jennifer Parrett: "Transition to High School - What Works (and why it is important)"

The transition from primary to high school has been the subject of funded development in recent years. Substantial research points to the fact that transition to high school is critical for student engagement and retention.

This workshop is designed to examine effective ways of utilising the funding offered, to create a positive transition from primary to high school. From an Academy Fellowship study, transition practices have been evaluated within the Northern Spirit Learning Community in Albury, a Learning Community that was initially aimed at improving transition. Deputy Principals will be asked to examine current practices, research findings, and a case study on what one school has done, in collaboration with its learning community, to improve transition for students.

This workshop will be presented by a small team of dedicated executive in transition – Di Hennessy, Principal Liaison Officer for Student Engagement, Anne Nolan, Principal of Thurgoona Public School, and Jennifer Parrett, Deputy Principal, James Fallon High School.

Sabreena Taylor and Julie Dupuche (NSR QT&DER consultants): "Tips and Tricks Toolbox for leading DER in your school"
