Developing a Middle Years Approach
by Brian Ralph
Principal Liaison Officer, Strategic Initiatives Directorate, DET

Brian was Principal of Auburn Girls High School for 13 years, between 1989 and 2003. During this time the school was at the forefront of educational innovation in the Middle Years. Since 2003 Brian has been seconded into State Office as a secondary principal working in the areas of leadership development, quality teaching, quality service, primary-secondary transition, the Middle Years of schooling and a wide variety of other projects that directly affect secondary schools.

Developing a Middle Years Approach

This workshop provides a broad introduction to the possibilities for action in the Middle Years at the individual school level.

Key issues addressed during the workshop include: What are the Middle Years of Schooling? What are the key areas for development in adolescent learners? What are the implications of adolescence for teaching and learning? How can we respond most effectively at the school level to the challenge of the Middle Years?

Outcomes:

  1. To enhance each participant’s knowledge in relation to the Middle Years and its implications for teachers and schools

  2. To provide participants with a range of Middle Years strategies which they could apply within their own school context
