What do teachers and leaders do that ha the greatest effect on student learning?

Ann McIntyre is the Director of Professional Learning and Leadership Development, in the NSW Department of Education and Training. In this role Ann leads a directorate which serves the professional learning needs of over 50,000 teachers and 15,000 administrative staff.

Ann came to this position having been the Director of Bondi School Education Area and leading the diverse schools of the area through a major period of change for four years.

Prior to this, Ann was a School Principal for eight years. During her principalship, the school and Ann received numerous awards and a Quality Assurance Report stating “this school is on the leading edge of best practices in teaching and learning”.

Ann was an inaugural winner of the Sydney Leadership Award. This award targeted leaders with vision, intellectual rigour and a strong commitment to social justice.

In 2006 Ann was awarded the rank of Fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders in acknowledgement of her outstanding contribution to professional learning and leadership development of educators in the NSW public education system.

Ann has a strong commitment to professional learning as the key strategy for improving school practices and enhancing learning outcomes for students.

What do teachers and leaders do that has the greatest effect on student learning?

The session will explore the link between professional learning and school improvement and how building the capacity of both teachers and school leaders effects student outcomes. From this understanding professional learning strategies and programs to build teacher and leadership capacity in NSW Department of Education and Training will be explored.

Outcomes:

Understanding of the effect of professional learning on school improvement. Awareness of professional learning strategies and programs to build teacher and leader capacity.
