The Rite Journey: Helping Develop Healthy Young People by
Andrew Lines

Andrew Lines is a Physical Education / Outdoor Education teacher who is currently overseeing the high school in a K-12 Independent School in South Australia.

His passion for health, fitness and providing students with positive and successful experiences in PE led to the publishing of ‘Sport Covered’ – his exploration of teaching 23 sports using a games based approach to strengthen student’s development of game sense and their motivation to learn.

More recently Andrew has turned his passion to providing relevant learning experiences for students, especially in the social, emotional and spiritual realms.

Andrew’s intention to provide this experience for his students is gleaned from his own quest for self development, his desire to meet students where they are at and his endeavour to meld both traditional and alternative education practices…along with a yearning to instill within his students a willingness to challenge society’s mainstream expectations.

The Rite Journey: Helping Develop Healthy Young People

‘The Rite Journey’ guides schools to create a program that allows each year 9 student to share in a year long partnership with their teacher-guide as they explore what it means to be a respectful and responsible adult in their society.

Given the common current perspective that initiation and rites of passage should be rediscovered for young people in our western culture, a feature of The Rite Journey the specially created ceremonies held throughout the year. These numerous celebration points and rites of passage follow the seven steps of a hero's journey (the calling, the departure, the following, the challenges, getting lost, the return and the homecoming).

The framework allows for the curricular content to be taught within the 4 topics of Relationship with Self, Others, Life and The World.

Some of the content covered can include ‘Personal Biography’, ‘Gender Identity and Construction’, ‘Feelings and Beliefs’, ‘Love, Relationships and Sexuality’, ‘Anger, Bullying, Depression and Violence’, ‘Risk Taking’, ‘Stillness, Meditation and Relaxation’, ‘Communication’ and ‘Mentoring’.
The content is established with strong connection points between students, teachers, parents/caregivers, mentors and peers.

A strength of the program is its adaptability to schools in various cultures and contexts.

Outcomes:

To introduce the concept of providing a program to year 9 students which acknowledges the important transition from childhood to beginning adulthood whilst incorporating ‘training’ in being a respectful and responsible adult member of society.

Provide opportunity to understand the emotional and social needs of students (especially boys) at this age and explore ways for schools to respond to these.

Acknowledge the absence of rites of passage in our western society, gain an understanding of their purpose and investigate the benefits of schools rediscovering such initiatives.
